Social Wellness Month

Social Wellness Month

July is Social Wellness Month! This is a time to recognize the importance of social connections and the impact they have on your well-being. Lack of social connections can lead to a decline in mental and physical health. Compass Health describes social wellness as, “one’s ability to effectively interact with those around him/herself and to create a support system that includes friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc.”

When there is a lack of support around you, loneliness sets in and you are left to be surrounded by your own thoughts, which can sometimes be your worst enemy. Not participating in social interactions and gatherings can lead to loss of motivation, passion and purpose, and increase loneliness. Minimal activity can decrease your physical health, leading to mobility issues, heart problems, energy levels, muscle loss, and more.

Physical activity and social connections can accomplish two goals: improved mental health and improved physical health. With positive energy to surround you and physical movement to improve bodily function and health, your overall well-being will be so much better!

How can you promote Social Wellness this month for yourself and others?

1. Be intentional about nurturing relationships.

This can be done by either calling up an old friend to catch up or meet in-person, visit your family members for some quality time and bonding, volunteer for an organization or group to help others and improve their social connections, and so much more. Find your people and make memories, support one another, and strengthen those bonds. You never know what someone is going through, and one phone call or meet-up has the potential to make a huge difference in either of your lives.

2. Get active.

Join a group, sport, organization, or any physical activity that gets you active. Doing this while forming strong relationships tackles mental and physical health in one. It can give purpose, something to look forward to outside of yourself, and make you feel good inside and out! Poor physical health can cause poor mental health, and vice versa. That is why it is so important to stay active and maintain those connections to the outside world, as well as the people in it.

3. Dive into your community.

Look around your local area and see where you might make a difference. Is there a charity or organization that could use a donation to help those in need? Do you have a neighbor that needs their grass cut? When you see a piece of trash on the road, can you pick it up and throw it away? Is there a nursing home or clinic you can volunteer at to help the elderly and sick? Can you be a mentor to someone in need of guidance in their life? Any act of kindness to help encourage a healthier lifestyle in your community can make a difference in social wellness.

4. Take care of yourself.

When was the last time you took some time out of your day to do something for you? Take a bath, play a game, cook your favorite meal, practice your favorite sport, read a book, try something new…anything for yourself to practice mindfulness, being in the present, and self-love. If you don’t learn to love yourself, how can you learn to love others properly? Make time for yourself and do something you enjoy that uplifts your state of mind.

We encourage awareness and the practice of social wellness this month, but we should be acknowledging it year-round. Peace, self-love, physical health, mental health, and relationships all play a role in your well-being. The best part about it is, taking care of yourself is something you can control.

You decide when to get out of bed every morning.

You decide who you talk to or spend time with that day.

You decide whether you go on that nature walk or not.

You decide when to make time for yourself.

You decide who you are going to help that day.

You decide.

You do not always get to choose what happens to you, but you can choose how you let it impact you and how you respond. Being physically and mentally healthy allows you to be better prepared when difficult circumstances come.
